All tally users should upgrade to latest versions of tally.erp 9. as on today the latest version is tally.erp 9 release 1.61

Many Tally users are not sure to upgrade to tally.erp 9 or not.
My opinion is that due to financial closing of F.Y. 2008-09, it is not advisable to upgrade to tally.erp 9 if you have entries relating to vat, excise and TDS. you will face problems for filling vat, returns, TDS reports, tds for payment in relation to capital expenses and some other major problems are there to be solved by the tally team.
I have raised TDS query with the Tally and here is the reply I got from its support team confirming the problem in its ERP module and they will fix it in its next release.Here is the mail from the tally team

Also, I have raised an another problem relating to incorrect reporting under the Gujarat Vat vide support ticket no. [TLY-6472787-3368857] on date 6th May, 2009. so it is better to wait for a month time and I am sure tally team will fix all the major problems in tally.erp 9 and then it will be a pleasing experience to work on tally.erp 9.
However for learning purpose only, there is not harm to download and upgrade to tally.erp 9

The problem you are facing because you are using the data of a company which was written on a latest Tally version Release.
So, you have to upgrade your Tally version to the latest tally or else use the restore of your old back up which was taken only from your current Tally version otherwise, it won’t work
